Could Lie Detector Tests help with Immigration?

Friday 11th November 2022
EM

The UK's immigration crisis is becoming more and more worrisome, up to November 1, 2022, home secretary Suella Braverman stated that there has been an "invasion" of approximately 40,000 illegal migrants arriving on UK shores so far this year. This is more than double the figure for last year. When looking at these figures, we do have to take into consideration the horrors that developed in the Ukraine and the desperate families who needed and still need our help. These people were evacuated and did not attempt to evade authorities, which is what we are looking at today. Therefore, we need to look at figures that do not include these genuine asylum seekers, for instance, in 2020. What do the reports say? The…

Who are our UK travellers, and why do they have such a bad reputation?

Tuesday 1st November 2022
EM

Travelling communities in the UK are constantly under scrutiny and are often evicted in large operations carried out by the police. There have been many over recent years, all publicised and all of which lay a foundation for the British public to judge and scrutinize them. The most famous one was in 2011, when 400 travellers were evicted from Dale Farm. This news broadcast evacuation showed this community as volatile and unreasonable, but is this really the case, or do we simply go along with what everyone believes and the reputation that may have been created by just a few families? All communities have a proportion of people who make bad decisions, but we should not tar all of them…

Why choose honesty over deceit? Our lives are complicated, we have so many relationships that require truth and transparency to succeed. We balance work, love and friendships and at points we need to make decisions that will alter the course of a relationship or even end it. When we reach these junctions, it is a good idea to weigh up your options, is the relationship worth saving, and how much do you really value it moving forward? 100 Years of the Polygraph

Wednesday 19th October 2022
JT

One hundred and one years ago in 1921 John Larson, a Californian based police officer and physiologist, produced a device which could simultaneously measure pulse, blood pressure and respiration in a person as an aid to detecting lies and deception. However, as with so many inventions—the telephone, television, to name but a couple—others have also been involved in the development. In 1914 Italian psychologist, Vittorio Benussi published a paper concerning the respiratory symptoms of the lie and in 1915, American lawyer William Marston invented a test for the systolic blood pressure as a means of indicating deception. All of these things when taken together formed John Larson's polygraph, which today is often incorrectly referred to as a lie detector test.…

What is Halloween and why do we celebrate it

Saturday 8th October 2022
EM

Halloween derives from "All Hallows Eve" the night before the two Christian holy days, "All Saints Eve" and "All Souls Day". Known as "Allhallowtide", these three days are an opportunity to celebrate the saints and wish the recently deceased a safe journey to heaven. Although the meaning of Halloween is actually down to religion, there is no direct mention of it in the bible. It is more a western tradition, originating from an ancient Celtic festival of "Samhain". During this celebration, people would create spectacular, eerie, and spooky garments to ward off ghosts. It is written that Pope Boniface IV originally set 13th May to be the celebration for the Blessed Virgin Mary but it is believed to have been moved by Pope…
