The History of the Lie Detector:
The lie detector, formally known as the polygraph, has a remarkable history rooted in both science and human psychology. Designed to record physiological changes linked to stress or deception, the lie detector remains one of the most recognised tools in credibility assessment today.
Early Developments:
Efforts to detect lies are centuries old. Ancient societies relied on primitive truth tests — from rice-chewing rituals in China to fire ordeals in India — based on the belief that guilt reveals itself physically. The first scientific step came in 1895, when Italian criminologist Cesare Lombroso created a device to monitor blood pressure changes during interrogation. His invention set the foundation for modern lie detection technology.
The Birth of the Modern Polygraph:
The modern polygraph emerged in 1921, when John Augustus Larson, a medical student and police officer in California, developed a machine that measured blood pressure, pulse, and breathing simultaneously. Larson’s creation revolutionised forensic investigations by allowing examiners to record multiple biological responses at once.
In 1938, Leonarde Keeler, one of Larson’s students, enhanced the polygraph by adding galvanic skin response sensors, which detect sweating linked to nervous tension. Keeler’s version became the industry standard and shaped polygraph testing for decades.
Modern Polygraph Testing:
Over time, polygraph technology advanced from analogue needles and ink to fully digital systems. Today, modern lie detectors are used worldwide for criminal investigations, security screening, and private truth verification. Despite debate over accuracy, the polygraph continues to play an important role in behavioural analysis and truth verification science.
